Stockpile

June 23rd, 2018 at 11:06 pm

I confess. I have a stockpile. I estimate I have a good six months worth of TP, paper towels, laundry detergent, dish soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, trash bags, batteries, tissues. I don't stockpile a lot of food though. And I purchased all of it with Swagbucks gift cards, so it was all free. My best friend teases me about it (good natured kidding). I got to thinking why I do it. Some people talk about being influenced by parents or grandparents who were effected by the depression. In my case, I think it was the last great recession. I saw so many people come into the career center who had lost jobs, were going to lose their homes, who actually felt they were doing things the right way by having a six month emergency fund but who still could not find employment and were running out of money. It was heartbreaking and it also scared me. I set my mind to paying off my house so I wouldn't be homeless. I saved up a very large emergency fund just in case I ever lost my job. When I recently bought my car I payed cash so I wouldn't have a car payment. I think stockpiling things gives me a certain sense of safety. It's all neatly organized in my storage room. I guess some would call it odd, but I just like having it. Anyone else profoundly effected by a particular economic circumstance?

Yes, I’m super nervous. I managed to rack up CC debt again, but I’m obsessed with saving and paying them off. Any little bit of cash I get, I add to my EF and debt.

Several economic circumstances! My divorce, which devastated me financially (and emotionally) was my first really big scare. (Though one could argue that growing up in a alcoholic household was really the first -- but I didn't really understand exactly what was going on.) Then the downturn in 2008, when I was unemployed, was a big scare. Just nearing retirement age, and worrying constantly that I would lose my job and be unable to get another was a terrible worry.

I would say I didn't change my financial mindset, though, until I read The Tightwad Gazette in the late 80's.

I think Ive had several events--like lots of us, a divorce. My first husband was a big earner and a big spender, but because he was a salesman, our income was extremely variable. We didn't save a lot, but after we split up, and I got remarried, had a child, and settled into my job, I became a disciplined saver. My DH is frugal, but a horrible planner so I've had to take on his saving and mine as well as DD's education fund. Lots of it is fulled by anxiety.

Good for you on the stockpile. I don't have as much TP and other paper items as you do, but we do have a few extra.

I grew up poor and my folks lived through the Great Depression (1930s) so I was told about saving stuff, stockpiling stuff, etc. Money has been tight here and there as an adult, but I think the fact I usually have some things on hand whether it is food or TP, it has helped.
